How far in advance should I book my move?
When should I book movers, or a rental truck?
A question I get asked at least 20 times a month is, “when should I book my move/how much advanced notice do I need to give?” Sometimes, I find this question a bit amusing, because it’s kind of like asking, “how close can I get to the fire without getting burned?” Despite the initial amusement, I’ve heard of so many situations over the years where people are stranded and are calling us last minute to try and get the help they need. Each and every month, we will have at least 10 or more people calling us, wanting us to move them that day or the next day. Often it is for legitimate reasons that couldn’t have been known ahead of time, but usually it is from a lack of planning.
In order to ensure you don’t get stuck in a really stressful and frantic situation, book your movers well in advance. Ideally, you are booking them 6 or more weeks prior to your moving date. That may seem like a long way in the future, but there are real benefits to being one of the first people to book. The main benefit is that you can be the first move of the day. Often moving companies will do multiple moves in a day, so if you are the first job, you know with certainty what time your job will start at. If you are the second job of a day, you will probably be given a time range (ex. 1-3pm start time), that is the best educated GUESS of that company. Your start time will be based entirely on how their earlier job goes, which has a lot of factors out of their control, such as: speed of elevator, length of hallway, amount of stairs, etc.
Also, if you book early, you may be able to save money. A lot of companies will have different rates at different times of the month. The last week of the month is almost always the busiest time for a moving company. Therefore, the rates often are raised because they know the demand is high. At Low Budget Moving, we don’t do this practice, and instead we have the same rates at any time of any month. But if you are hiring a company that does this, then inquire if you could book on a day where the rate is lower.
Lastly, if you are planning on moving yourself and were going to rent a truck and have some buddies give you a hand, the same principle of booking early still applies. You’d be amazed how many people call us who were unable to rent a Uhaul, because they were all booked. Then they try to book us for a last minute job, and we are unable to do it, because we already are fully booked.
