Tips to Safely Move & Store Your Electronic Equipment

Relocating to a new place brings about an exciting chapter in your life. However, moving also entails ensuring that all your belongings, including sensitive electronic equipment, are transported safely and securely. If you're concerned about how to handle your electronics during a move, these helpful tips will make the process smoother.

1. Back Up Your Data

Before you start the packing process, it's crucial to back up all your data. Information stored on your computers, tablets, and smartphones can be invaluable, and you don't want to risk losing it during the move. Use an external hard drive or a cloud-based service to store your data securely.

2. Unplug and Disconnect

When it's time to pack, carefully unplug each device before removing any external parts. Disconnect cables and accessories and organize them separately. Keep in mind to label each cable or accessory so that you'll know which device they belong to when you're unpacking.

3. Use Original Packaging If Possible

The original packaging of your electronic equipment is designed specifically for their shape and size, and provides the best protection. If you have the original boxes, consider using them for packing. If you don’t, use sturdy boxes and customize the inner space with bubble wrap or foam padding.

4. Secure Loose Parts

For electronic devices with detachable parts, safely secure them to prevent damage. For example, tape down the toner or ink cartridges inside your printers or secure the scanner lid to prevent it from opening during transit.

5. Pack with Care

Place bubble wrap or anti-static packing peanuts at the bottom of your box first before placing your electronics. Once your device is inside, fill any remaining spaces with more packing material to prevent movement. Avoid using newspaper or regular packing peanuts, as they can generate static electricity that can damage your equipment.

6. Label Correctly

Label your boxes clearly, specifying which room they need to be placed in the new location. Mark 'fragile' and 'this side up' on the boxes to ensure they are handled with care.

7. Climate-Controlled Storage

If you need to store your electronic items, remember that they require special care. Choose a storage facility that offers climate-controlled systems. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity can severely damage electronic goods. A climate-controlled environment ensures your electronics remain in the same condition they were in when you packed them.

Relocating can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to the safe transport of your valuable electronics. However, with careful planning and attention, you can ensure the safety of your devices throughout the moving process.
